What is obsidian-second-brain?

Persistent memory for Claude Code and 6 other CLI agents, stored as plain markdown in your Obsidian vault. Stop re-explaining your projects, decisions and people every session. 45 commands: hybrid semantic search, self-rewriting notes, key-less web research, and scheduled agents that maintain the vault while you sleep.

Overview of obsidian-second-brain

What it is

obsidian-second-brain is a plugin that provides persistent memory for Claude Code and six other CLI agents, storing information as plain markdown files in an Obsidian vault. It is an evolution of Karpathy's LLM Wiki pattern, where the vault rewrites itself instead of just appending new pages. It uses OKM (Open Knowledge Metabolism), which categorizes facts as timeless, dated, or pointers to prevent outdated information from accumulating. The plugin offers 45 commands, including hybrid semantic search, self-rewriting notes, key-less web research, and scheduled agents that maintain the vault automatically.

Key features

  • Self-rewriting notes: new sources update existing pages rather than appending, and contradictions are reconciled automatically via /obsidian-reconcile.
  • 4 scheduled agents: morning brief, nightly consolidation, weekly review, and vault-health check run without manual prompting.
  • Live research from X (via Grok), the web (via Perplexity Sonar Pro), and YouTube (via transcript API and optional vision analysis).
  • AI-first note format with frontmatter and a preamble for LLM retrieval, not human review.
  • /obsidian-synthesize finds unnamed patterns across sources and writes synthesis pages.
  • /obsidian-challenge searches the vault for past failures and reversed decisions to push back with the user's own history.
  • Multilingual trigger schema and a /create-command interview flow for adding new commands.

Use cases

  • After a meeting, /obsidian-save extracts decisions, people, tasks, and ideas into the correct notes.
  • Ingest voice memos, screenshots, or YouTube videos with /obsidian-ingest, which transcribes, extracts structure, and rewrites existing vault pages.
  • Before a big decision, /obsidian-challenge uses the vault's past failures to challenge the user.
  • /obsidian-visualize generates a visual canvas of the vault, color-coded by type.
  • The nightly agent runs five phases: close the day, reconcile contradictions, synthesize patterns, heal orphan notes, and rebuild the index.
  • /obsidian-daily pulls calendar events, overdue tasks, and overnight changes into a daily note.
  • /x-read fetches X posts with thread and replies; /x-pulse scans trending topics for content ideas.
  • /research and /research-deep perform web research with citations, and vault-first deep research that fills only knowledge gaps.
