Overview of claude-devtools
What it is
claude-devtools is an open-source debugging tool for Claude Code. It reads session logs and transcripts saved to the local ~/.claude/ directory and reconstructs detailed information that the terminal hides. It does not wrap, modify, or interfere with Claude Code. The project is licensed under MIT and is free.
Key features
- Per-turn token attribution across 7 categories (CLAUDE.md, skills, @-mentioned files, tool I/O, thinking, team overhead, user text) with compaction visualization - Terminal-friendly copy and paste: real selectable text, one-click copy on code blocks, and export to Markdown/JSON/plain text - Project memory viewer: surfaces
MEMORY.mdlayers stored in~/.claude/projects//memory/with cross-layer wikilinks and an “Open in…” launcher - Team and subagent execution trees: isolated trees per agent with tool traces, token metrics, duration, and cost - Tool call inspector with specialized viewers (syntax-highlighted Read, inline Edit diffs, Bash output, subagent trees) - SSH remote session inspection via
~/.ssh/configwith agent forwarding and key auth - Command palette (Cmd+K) for cross-session search and multi-pane layout with drag-and-drop tabs - Notification triggers for .env access, tool errors, high token usage, and custom regex patterns
Use cases
The tool is designed for developers debugging Claude Code sessions. It helps inspect thinking steps, tool call details, subagent activity, context window composition, and team coordination messages. It can also be used to review per-project memory files and to inspect sessions running on remote machines over SSH.
