What is mcp-gateway?

MCP Gateway is a reverse proxy and management layer for MCP servers, enabling scalable, session-aware stateful routing and lifecycle management of MCP servers in Kubernetes environments.

Overview of mcp-gateway

What it is

MCP Gateway is a reverse proxy and management layer for Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers. It enables scalable, stateless request routing, authorization, and lifecycle management of MCP servers in Kubernetes environments. The project provides a data gateway for independently routing each MCP request to a ready server instance, and a control plane for managing the MCP server lifecycle (deploy, update, delete). It includes enterprise-ready integration points for telemetry, access control, and observability. This version requires MCP 2026-07-28 clients and adapters; it does not provide legacy initialization, transport sessions, or protocol downgrade.

Key features

  • Control Plane RESTful APIs for MCP server management: deploy, list, retrieve metadata, check status, access logs, update, and delete adapters (MCP servers).
  • Tool registration and management: register, list, retrieve, update, and delete tools with MCP tool definition metadata.
  • Agent and Session management (Preview, opt-in): CRUD for agent definitions and sessions, with SSE streaming for session runs and messages.
  • Data Plane gateway routing: direct MCP server access via /adapters/{name}/mcp and dynamic tool routing via a Tool Gateway Router at /mcp.
  • Authentication and authorization support: Entra ID authentication and basic application role authorization (read/write roles, mandatory mcp.admin role).
  • Kubernetes-native deployment using StatefulSets and headless services; metadata stored in Redis (local) or Cosmos DB (cloud).
  • Management portal (React SPA) served at /portal/ for listing, creating, editing, deleting adapters and tools, inspecting status and logs, and an in-browser JSON-RPC test console.

Use cases

MCP Gateway is designed for organizations that need to deploy, manage, and route requests to multiple MCP servers in a Kubernetes environment. It is suitable for scenarios requiring stateless, session-aware routing of MCP requests, centralized lifecycle management of MCP servers, and enterprise-grade access control and observability. The tool gateway router enables dynamic routing to registered tools based on tool definitions, supporting scalable AI development platforms.
