Overview of prest
What it is
pRESTd (PostgreSQL REST) is a production-ready API that delivers instant REST and Model Context Protocol (MCP) APIs on existing or new SQL databases. It supports PostgreSQL 9.5+ (default) and MySQL 8.0.19+ (with engine = 'mysql'). It provides CRUD, custom SQL routes, authentication, ACL, and a read-only MCP endpoint without requiring hand-written backend code.
Key features
- Instant REST and MCP APIs on PostgreSQL or MySQL databases.
- CRUD operations, custom SQL routes, authentication, and ACL.
- Read-only MCP endpoint.
- Supports PostgreSQL 9.5+ (default) and MySQL 8.0.19+ (separate dialect).
- Query script templates with interpolation and binding for safe SQL construction.
- 1-Click Deploy to Heroku.
Use cases
- Rapidly building RESTful APIs for existing or new PostgreSQL/MySQL applications.
- Providing realtime, high-performance backends without writing server-side code.
- Integrating with AI clients (Cursor, Claude, etc.) via MCP over HTTP.
- Multi-database setups with support for PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Getting started
Install pREST via Docker, Homebrew, or Go (see documentation). Configure the database connection and start the server. Example for PostgreSQL: sh export PREST_PG_URL='postgres://user:pass@localhost:5432/mydb' # Then call: # GET /{database}/{schema}/{table} For MySQL, set engine and URL: sh export PREST_ENGINE=mysql export PREST_DB_URL='mysql://user:pass@localhost:3306/mydb' See the repository README for full installation and configuration details.
