Overview of getspecstory
What it is
getstory is a local-first tool that captures, indexes, and makes searchable every interaction you have with AI coding assistants across all your projects and tools. It saves conversations locally and can optionally sync them to a cloud platform for team sharing and cross-machine search.
Key features
- Automatically saves AI coding sessions (from Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex CLI, and others) locally in
.specstory/history/. * Supports multiple terminal coding agents via a single CLI wrapper (specstory run). * Offers optional sync to SpecStory Cloud for full-text search, chat across sessions, and team sharing. * Provides a local search capability across all projects. * Includes a/lorecommand to mine history into reusable, evidence-backed agent skills. * The CLI is open source; IDE extensions for Cursor and Copilot are closed source.
Use cases
- Developers who want to never lose a solution, code snippet, or architectural decision made during AI-assisted coding. * Teams that need to search across all AI interactions from multiple computers and members. * Users who want to resume a coding session between different agents or machines. * Anyone looking to turn past AI conversations into searchable, shareable knowledge.
Getting started
See the repository README for installation instructions for each supported agent. For the CLI, the README shows: brew tap specstoryai/tapbrew install specstory For IDE extensions, search for “SpecStory” in the respective extension marketplace.
