What is FlyEnv?

Native local development environment for Windows, macOS & Linux. A modern alternative to XAMPP, MAMP, Laragon and Laravel Herd, with runtimes, databases, web servers, local sites, HTTPS, AI coding tools and MCP.

Overview of FlyEnv

What it is

FlyEnv is a native local development environment for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It is presented as a modern alternative to tools like XAMPP, MAMP, Laragon, and Laravel Herd, and is designed to manage runtimes, databases, web servers, local sites, HTTPS, AI coding tools, and MCP from a single desktop application. The project is open source under the BSD 3-Clause License and its source code is available on GitHub. Installation packages are built through GitHub Actions, and free Windows code signing is provided by SignPath.io with a certificate from the SignPath Foundation.

Key features

  • Manage multiple runtimes per project, including PHP, Node.js, Python, Java, Go, .NET, Flutter, Ruby, Rust, Erlang, Bun, Deno, and Zig.
  • Support for databases: MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, ClickHouse, Neo4j, and Qdrant.
  • Web and app server support for Nginx, Apache, Caddy, FrankenPHP, and Tomcat.
  • Local domain creation with HTTPS via certificates and reverse proxies.
  • AI coding tool integration including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Kimi, GitHub Copilot CLI, Ollama, n8n, and a built-in FlyEnv MCP Server for exposing selected environment capabilities.
  • Per-project runtime version switching and service grouping into reusable startup workflows.

Use cases

FlyEnv is intended for local development of web applications that require multiple runtimes, databases, and services. It can be used for Laravel, Django, ERPNext, Gitea stacks. It also supports AI coding workflows and management of AI coding clients alongside local infrastructure. The environment can replace XAMPP/MAMP when more runtimes and project-level versions are needed, Laragon when cross-platform support is required, and Laravel Herd when a broader environment beyond PHP/Laravel is needed. It is not a replacement for Docker when containerized reproducibility or production parity is the goal.
