Overview of minecraft-mcp-server

What it is

A Minecraft MCP Server powered by the Mineflayer API. It enables AI assistants to control a Minecraft character in real time, allowing them to build structures, explore the world, and interact with the game environment through natural language instructions. The server currently supports Minecraft version 1.21.11.

Key features

  • Movement and navigation: get position, move to coordinates, look at a point, jump, move in a direction, and fly directly to a location - Inventory management: list inventory, find a specific item, equip an item - Block manipulation: place a block, dig a block, get block information, find nearby blocks of a type - Furnace smelting: smelt items using a furnace-like block - Entity interaction: find the nearest entity of a specific type - Communication: send chat messages in‑game and read recent chat from other players - Game state detection: detect the current gamemode

Use cases

  • Build structures from images or natural language descriptions - Explore the Minecraft world autonomously - Automate repetitive tasks such as mining, crafting, or farming - Interact with the game environment for testing or educational purposes

Getting started

Prerequisites: Git, Node.js (>= 20.10.0), a running Minecraft game (tested with 1.21.8 Java Edition), and an MCP‑compatible client (e.g., Claude Desktop). 1. Create a singleplayer world and open it to LAN (ESC → Open to LAN). The bot will try to connect using port 25565 and hostname localhost. 2. Configure Claude Desktop by editing claude_desktop_config.json with the following content: json { “mcpServers”: { “minecraft”: { “command”: “npx”, “args”: [ “-y”, “github:yuniko-software/minecraft-mcp-server”, “--host”, “localhost”, “--port”, “25565”, “--username”, “ClaudeBot” ] } } } 3. Reboot Claude Desktop completely. 4. Start Claude Desktop while the Minecraft world is open to LAN. The bot should join the game. For full details, see the repository README.
