Overview of nimbalyst
What it is
Nimbalyst is an open-source visual workspace for coding agents such as Codex, Claude Code, OpenCode, and GitHub Copilot. It is a desktop app for macOS, Windows, and Linux, with an iOS companion app. It is free and MIT licensed. It provides WYSIWYG editors for markdown, mockups, Mermaid, Excalidraw, CSV, data models, and code in Monaco, so humans and agents edit the same files. It includes session management, task tracking, git integration, MCP client and server support, and an extension SDK.
Key features
- Visual editing of agent work with WYSIWYG editors for markdown, mockups, Mermaid, Excalidraw, CSV, data models, and code in Monaco.
- Red/green diff review to step through proposed edits and accept or reject each one.
- Parallel agent sessions, each isolated in its own git worktree, managed on a kanban board.
- Task tracking for plans, bugs, features, and todos that agents read and update alongside humans.
- Git built in: branch and worktree management, staging, AI-drafted commits, and an embedded terminal.
- MCP client and servers with tool results rendered as visual widgets rather than raw JSON.
- Extension SDK using the EditorHost contract; current extensions include an Astro website editor, visual git log, mindmap, slides, and a 3D object editor.
Use cases
- Reviewing and approving coding-agent changes in rendered documents.
- Running multiple coding agents in parallel across isolated worktrees.
- Tracking plans, bugs, features, and todos alongside agents.
- Managing git state, commits, and worktrees from one interface.
- Building custom editors for file types not shipped, using the extension SDK.
- Using the iOS companion to monitor sessions, reply by text or voice, review diffs, queue tasks, and receive push notifications.
